The Jewish Studies & Music Study Group Award is presented annually by the American Musicological Society’s Jewish Studies & Music Study Group to recognize scholarly contributions at the intersection of music and Jewish studies. This year, the award honors a monograph, book, or edited volume of exceptional merit published in English (including translations) that advances the understanding of music in Jewish culture and history through a variety of theoretical and methodological frameworks. Eligible works for the upcoming award cycle must bear a copyright date between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024.
The JSMSG Book Award Committee, which includes both JSMSG board members and external reviewers, will select a single award recipient from all eligible candidates. Anyone may submit a nomination or self-nomination; however, all nominated authors must be members in good standing of the AMS. Nominators are kindly asked to provide access to the books they nominate. The committee will consider only one work per primary author or editor. If the committee receives multiple nominations for work by the same author or editor, the committee will request that they select just one for consideration.
Nominations should be submitted via the form below no later than June 30, 2025. The committee aims to notify all authors about the results by August 15, 2025. The winner will be announced during the 2025 AMS meeting in Minneapolis.
A call for nominations for an article award will be released in Spring 2026.
The call and submission form are available here via Google Forms.
